The Great Gatsby (2013)

By Francheska N. Quiñones

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow fast in movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was be finning over again with the summer.”
                                                                                    - F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

From legendary director Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet) comes the most anticipated film of the year, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. The film is cinematographers’ dream with beautiful scenery, opulent festivities, enchanting costumes and of course, the ever so dapper Gatsby.  Placed in 1920 Rhode Island, New York the movie follows the story of Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his lavish lifestyle full of cracks, filled with deceit, infatuation and an abundance of mayhem.  It is not a love story nonetheless, one cannot help but take an interest in the intricate relationship between Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan).  Baz Luhrmann’s great eye for meshing the classic with the modern, makes him create an amazing music collaboration giving the listeners a cocktail of artists. With melodies such as the exquisite Lana del Rey, Florence + The Machine and Beyoncé covering an Amy Winehouse song, this soundtrack is one to buy and cherish.  When it comes to the style this film is adorned with spectacular attire made by Miuccia Prada who recently exhibited her creations in New York.  Baz Luhrmann adapts Fitzgerald’s most celebrated novel and adorns it with  a dazzling cast, electrifying music and posh surroundings.  The summer clearly belongs to Gatsby.
